Cox spinal decompression at Synergy PT & Chiropractic in Alamo, TX
Focused spine evaluation

Disc and nerve symptoms deserve a clear clinical picture.

The goal of the evaluation is to understand your symptoms, available imaging, function, and prior care before deciding whether decompression is appropriate.

Is this worth evaluating?

Complex Spinal Compression, Recurrent Sciatica & Post-Collision Trauma Evaluated in PSJA

These symptoms can have different causes. A focused evaluation can help determine what may be contributing to your pain and whether conservative spine care is appropriate.

Pain that travels into the buttock, leg, arm, hand, or foot

Numbness, tingling, or weakness associated with neck or back symptoms

MRI-confirmed herniated, bulging, extruded, or degenerative discs

Back or neck pain that makes sitting, driving, sleeping, or working difficult

Symptoms that have persisted despite prior conservative care

A desire to understand non-surgical options before making a treatment decision

How the technique works

How Cox® Flexion-Distraction Changes Mechanical Loading

Cox® flexion-distraction uses controlled positioning and distraction to change mechanical loading around spinal joints and discs. Whether it is appropriate depends on your examination, symptoms, and clinical findings.

1

Identify the mechanical problem

Your evaluation considers symptoms, motion, neurological findings, available imaging, and how the problem affects daily function.

2

Apply controlled distraction when appropriate

Cox® flexion-distraction uses controlled positioning and movement intended to reduce mechanical stress and improve spinal motion.

3

Pair passive care with active rehabilitation

When indicated, chiropractic care is coordinated with physical therapy and functional rehabilitation so progress is not dependent on one passive treatment alone.

Clinical fit matters: decompression is not appropriate for every patient or every spinal condition. The evaluation is used to determine whether it belongs in your care plan.

Comparing care approaches

Why Single-Treatment Clinics Keep You Stuck in Pain

When a spinal disc herniates or a joint locks, two distinct problems occur: mechanical nerve compression AND surrounding muscle shutdown. Popping a joint without strengthening the core leads to immediate relapse. Conversely, exercising on an unaligned joint grinds cartilage down. Synergy solves both structural defects simultaneously so you stop wasting time and money.

Symptom-focused care

Relief can be useful, but the plan still needs context.

  • •Medication and injections may be used to manage symptoms, but they do not answer every mechanical or functional question.
  • •A generic exercise or adjustment plan may not account for disc findings, nerve symptoms, or prior treatment response.
  • •More invasive options may be considered in some cases, but patients often want to understand appropriate conservative options first.
Our evaluation framework

Evaluate, match the treatment, then measure response.

  • Review symptoms, function, available imaging, and prior care before recommending a plan.
  • Use Cox® flexion-distraction when the clinical findings support it.
  • Pair treatment with active rehabilitation and reassessment rather than relying on one modality alone.

Spinal Decompression FAQ

Questions about severe disc problems

Clear answers about herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, nerve compression, imaging, and non-surgical decompression care.

Most asked questions
Can spinal decompression help a severe disc herniation?
It may be appropriate for some people with disc herniation, depending on the location, severity, symptoms, neurologic findings, and overall clinical picture. The first step is an evaluation to determine whether a conservative decompression protocol is appropriate for your case.
Can spinal decompression help spinal stenosis?
Some patients with spinal stenosis may benefit from conservative care designed to reduce irritation, improve mobility, and improve function. Whether decompression is appropriate depends on the type and severity of stenosis and your individual findings.
What conditions may be considered for decompression care?
Common conditions evaluated include bulging discs, herniated discs, degenerative disc changes, sciatica, nerve irritation, certain forms of spinal stenosis, and persistent neck or low-back pain associated with disc involvement.
Is spinal decompression surgery?
No. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a conservative treatment approach. It does not involve incisions, anesthesia, injections, or surgical procedures.
Does spinal decompression hurt?
Treatment is generally intended to be controlled and tolerable. Patients may feel stretching or pressure changes during treatment. Settings are adjusted based on comfort, symptoms, and clinical findings.
Can decompression help sciatica or a pinched nerve?
It may help in certain cases where symptoms are associated with disc irritation or nerve compression. Sciatica can have several causes, so an exam is important before deciding whether decompression is a reasonable option.
What if my MRI shows a large herniated disc?
MRI findings are important, but treatment decisions should not be made from the image alone. We consider your symptoms, strength, sensation, reflexes, movement, functional limitations, and imaging together.
When would decompression not be appropriate?
Certain conditions may require medical or surgical evaluation instead of, or before, conservative decompression. Significant progressive weakness, bowel or bladder changes, saddle-area numbness, severe trauma, infection, fracture, or other red-flag findings require prompt medical assessment.
How many decompression visits will I need?
There is no single number that applies to everyone. Visit frequency and duration depend on your diagnosis, symptom severity, response to care, functional goals, and whether measurable progress is occurring.
What happens during the first evaluation?
We review your symptoms, history, prior imaging when available, and how your condition affects daily movement and function. The evaluation may include orthopedic, neurologic, movement, and functional testing to determine whether decompression may be appropriate.
Do I need an MRI before starting?
Not every patient requires an MRI before evaluation. If you already have imaging, bring it with you. If additional imaging or medical evaluation appears necessary, that can be discussed during your consultation.
How do I find out if I am a candidate?
Start with a spinal decompression evaluation. We will review your symptoms, imaging if available, neurologic findings, function, and treatment history before determining whether a conservative decompression protocol may be appropriate.
